Other Mommy’s $27.5M Opening: What the Box Office Estimate Shows
Other Mommy led the weekend with a $27.5 million North American estimate and a $45.2 million reported worldwide debut. Those figures show a strong opening, but do not establish that the film has broken even.

The estimated $27.5 million opening for Other Mommy is a striking first weekend, but it does not answer the question audiences often mean when they ask whether a movie “made its money back.” The Associated Press reported Sunday that the horror film sold an estimated $27.5 million in tickets at 3,365 U.S. and Canadian theaters from Friday through Sunday. AP ranked it No. 1 for the weekend. That ranking describes the reported opening, not the film’s eventual total. It is a domestic estimate, not a final total or the studio’s take.
What the opening estimate covers
Universal’s official movie page lists the film in theaters from October 9. AP’s Sunday report places the launch across North America and says the movie also opened in 50 international markets. Combining those markets produced an estimated $45.2 million global debut, according to the report. The two figures answer different questions: $27.5 million is the U.S. and Canadian weekend estimate; $45.2 million is the reported worldwide opening across the markets counted at that point.
Dividing the domestic estimate by 3,365 theaters gives a rough average of about $8,200 per theater. That ratio helps describe the scale of the launch, but it is not a typical-theater result: individual attendance and showtimes vary.
AP also cites a production budget of about $19 million. Comparing that estimate with the domestic opening makes the start look substantial, but it is not a profit calculation. The report gives no full cost or revenue statement for Other Mommy: it does not list marketing spend, the amount returned to Universal, or a country-by-country breakdown of the $45.2 million worldwide estimate. Those gaps mean the production budget and ticket sales cannot by themselves establish whether the film has broken even.
Why the reception figures need context
The same AP report says Other Mommy received poor reviews from critics and audiences and earned a D+ CinemaScore. That makes the opening notable but incomplete: the film led the weekend while its early critical and audience reception was weak. Ticket sales and reception describe different outcomes. The opening does not establish that weak reception had no effect on ticket sales. Neither tells us by itself how many people will return or recommend the film over the next several weeks.

What to watch next
AP noted that final domestic weekend figures were expected Monday, while its published list still uses Sunday estimates. Check for an updated domestic total before repeating $27.5 million as the settled number. Then look at the second-weekend change and whether international totals continue to be reported; those are more useful for judging staying power than a single opening rank. Later performance and a fuller cost and revenue picture are needed to assess profitability.
