What was recalled

A Brooklyn wholesaler is recalling a three-fish smoked pack sold under the Starfish Seafood brand because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The company announcement is dated October 9, 2026, and the FDA published it the same day.

The product is the Starfish Seafood Trio: cold smoked salmon, halibut and trout in 8 ounce (227 gram) vacuum-sealed packages. It is one product containing three fish, not three separate recalls.

Who recalled it and why

Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. of Brooklyn, New York, initiated a voluntary recall. The company is a wholesale distributor and did not manufacture the product, which matters for anyone tracing the supply chain.

The potential contamination was identified by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. The company says it is cooperating with that agency and with the FDA.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people may suffer short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Infections can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Which packages to check

The notice gives a short list of identifiers, and checking all of them is more reliable than relying on the brand name.

  • Brand: Starfish
  • Product: Starfish Seafood Trio, cold smoked salmon, halibut and trout
  • Net weight: 8 oz (227 g)
  • Packaging: vacuum-sealed plastic package
  • Lot number: D139149161-153
  • Expiration date: 12/01/2027
  • Country of origin: Latvia

The product was distributed in six states: New York, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, North Carolina and South Carolina.

What customers should do

Consumers who bought the recalled trio are urged not to eat it and to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

The company says it has notified affected customers and asked them to stop selling and distributing the product immediately, to identify remaining inventory, and to notify their own customers as appropriate.

Consumer questions go to Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. at (718) 858-6720, Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

What is not known

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this product. That is the state of the record as published, and it can change.

The notice does not say how much product was distributed, how many packages carry the lot number, or whether the same lot reached other states through further distribution. It also does not describe what testing found beyond the potential contamination.

One timing detail is worth keeping in view. The expiration date on the package runs to December 2027, more than a year after the recall. Smoked fish has a long refrigerated shelf life, so packages from this lot could still be in home refrigerators or retail cases well after the announcement leaves the news.

Why the Listeria warning is specific

Listeria is one of the foodborne organisms that public health agencies treat differently from Salmonella or E. coli, because it grows at refrigeration temperatures.

For a healthy adult, the illness is often mild and short. For a pregnant woman, an older adult or someone with a weakened immune system, the same exposure can become a bloodstream infection or meningitis, and in pregnancy it can affect the fetus even when the mother feels only mildly unwell.

That is why the notice tells consumers not to eat the product rather than to cook it, and why returning it is the action it describes.

Where the official record sits

The FDA page carries the company's announcement as a public service, and the agency states that posting it is not an endorsement of the product or the company. The page also carries product photographs of the front and back label panels, the most direct way to match a package against the notice.

For a package in hand, the practical order is brand, product name and weight, then lot number, then expiration date. If all four match, the notice applies.
